  2.      These tips are for those who are interested in using
  3. a color other than black in the original low-capacity
  4. inkjet cartridge (HP 51608A).
  5.  
  6.      Unlike its PaintJet cousin, the DeskJet, DeskJet
  7. Plus, and DeskJet 500 use only a black ink cartridge.  Up
  8. until the introduction of the DeskJet 500C, color was not
  9. available on a DeskJet series printer.  The 500C was the
  10. first DeskJet that allowed you to print with colors.  If
  11. you do not own a 500C, however, printing with colors is
  12. still a possibility.

  14.      Obviously, the first thing that must be done is to
  15. remove as much black ink residue from your empty 51608A
  16. ink cartridge as possible.  The removal process involves
  17. flushing a cartridge that has been filled with distilled
  18. water.  Hence, these tips have been placed in the "Flush
  19. ink cartridge" category in the "DeskJet Survival Kit"
  20. Main Menu.

  22.      Buy yourself a jug of distilled water, and then fill
  23. your EMPTY inkjet cartridge with the water (tap water is
  24. not recommended due to the chemical contents of drinking
  25. water).  Insert the cartridge into your printer, and
  26. start the "DeskJet Survival Kit" program.  From the
  27. program, select the "3) Flush ink cartridge" option, and
  28. choose "2) Heavy flush" which will produce a solid color
  29. printout.  Insert 40 pages of scrap 8.5" x 11" paper (you
  30. do recycle your paper, don't you?).  I use the back side
  31. of used copier paper I bring home from the office.  Run
  32. the flush program for approximately 6 pages of output. 
  33. Stop the process, remove the cartridge, refill it again
  34. with distilled water, reinsert the cartridge, and use the
  35. heavy flush option again from the program.  Repeat this
  36. cycle until you have printed 36 sheets of output.  You
  37. should notice that the output color becomes lighter and
  38. lighter.  It may take three refills of distilled water
  39. until you get clear output.  When you are satisfied that
  40. all the black has been removed, refill the cartridge with
  41. a colored ink.  Once refilled with your new color, you
  42. still should flush the cartridge for 6-10 pages until a
  43. deep color appears.

  45.      Yellow is the hardest color to prepare an empty
  46. cartridge for, but it can be done.  Personally, I prefer
  47. using an empty HP51626A high capacity cartridge for color
  48. ink refills, but for those who find refilling the high
  49. capacity cartridge too tricky, these tips have been
  50. provided.
